Communication Protocol lessons often begin with diagrams, but students understand them more deeply when they also observe a real exchange. A handshake is not only a drawing; it is a negotiated sequence of signals that decides whether two systems can communicate reliably.
A practical classroom exercise can use browser developer tools, command-line requests, or a small local service. The emphasis should be on evidence: what was sent, what came back, how long it took, and what changed when one condition failed.

Ask students to record:
- the first request or connection attempt
- the response status or acknowledgement
- headers or metadata that affect the next step
